Under-painting for Double Portrait, self and Devona Cartier
oil on panel
38" x 28.5"

Initial work on gessoed panel involves charcoal drawing followed by earth-toned under-painting and lead-white layer.
Under-painting for Mikado Spiel
oil on pine
17" x 18"
Once the "imprimatura" and lead white dry, color pigments are added in consecutive layers. The method dates to medieval times with hundreds of variations since, including mine, which began as a student under Prof. William Newman and Prof. Em. Leslie Exton at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. I use poppy and linseed oil with "antique" pigments such as vine black, madder lake, raw umber and sienna.
A process before framing may include embedded objects like this seashell. 2024
